Presidents Brief

Welcome to summer 21/22 and to what hopefully starts the return to normality. I hope you; your family and crew are well and coping OK with life's current challenges. We have plenty of news and things to look forward to and celebrate.

By all accounts Paddy Wagon was the first Young 88 in the water in December 1981. This means that Jim’s enduring design turns 40 this year and it is in much better health than some other quadragenarians that we know. More on the celebrations below.

We have also had some changes on the committee with the creation of a Technical Sub Committee to help Chris our measurer with the rules projects and Carl Webster stepping down as secretary. Special thanks to Carl for the work he has done in the role of secretary, especially setting up the Association on the RS Sport web and app platform that effectively runs the association.

The secretarial role is currently vacant plus we are looking to fill a gap in our skill/resource set with a communications person to help manage the media and social media and social platforms including the web site. If you are experienced or just keen to learn and help, then we are keen to hear from you. Neither role is onerous, the systems and processes are in place and working. We just have an opportunity to improve and need some help :)

The second-hand boat market has been very tight with strong demand in the North and South. There are however some great class compliant boats on TradeMe at the moment. We are keen to help the class boats keep playing an active part in the race fleet. Feel free to contact us for advice and don't forget we have indicative budgets and a syndicate agreement template in members section on website

Also, a reminder from personal experience to check and torque up the bolt that connects your tiller head to the rudder shaft and keeps your rudder in the boat! There have been a few incidents of rudders dropping out. Buy me a rum and I’ll tell you a story 😊. At the very least it is inconvenient so worth a quick and regular check.

Let's hope we escape the scourge of this virus soon. It seems that the only way out is via vaccination. Lots of businesses, events and skippers heading down the “no jab no work/play” path so it makes sense to get prepared if you can and get fully vaccinated sooner rather than later.

Please get in touch with any feedback or questions. You will find me on all the usual channels!

See you out there

Mike

From the Technical Committee

We continue to run the routine boat and sail measuring program. We will be slotting in a weighing session at Westhaven (Covid willing) and measuring sessions for each of the fleet locations before Xmas.

The current focus for some retrospective review and tidying up is the stanchion rule. We commissioned and have received back a very detailed Velocity Prediction Program study by Naval Architect Kevin Dibley. He has analysed the effect a movement in righting moment has on effective boat speed with some very detailed conclusions:

“As an example: at 16 knots TWS (top row) upwind at a TWA 32-degrees (left column), shows the stanchion that is outboard further is 1.6 s/nm faster than the standard yacht”.

Grant Crawford is spearheading this project for the Technical Committee and there will be an update at this week’s “Fleet Update Zoom Forum”

The rules modernisation project led by Phillip Rzpecky is well underway with help from international measurement rules expert Alistair Deaves. Our current rules have been copied into the World Sailing class rules template and are being reviewed and updated one by one

Don’t forget to contact our Class Measurer Chris Macindoe Mobile +64 27 204 7552 chmacindoe@gmail.com if planning to do major upgrades/repairs etc so you can ensure these modifications are compliant with the rules

Taking it to the Fleets

South

It looks like another bumper season down South with 6-8 x 88s racing regularly both mid-week and on the weekend. Crews are in training mode for the Southern Champs in Akaroa and the Southern Owners Champs in Lyttelton

West

Oh sigh, here we are into the season and can’t go anywhere, just staying at home and having picnics :) Hopefully we will soon be free and the Westhaven fleet into its usual mix of Norths Sail’s Thurs night short W/L course sprint racing and Westhaven Club’s Wednesday night racing

Our West women’s sailing initiative is back and being spearheaded by Association Treasurer Segolene “Ziggy” de Fontenay…….

The Y88 Owners Association launched last year the Young 88 women’s division at the beginning of Spring in line with our objective of attracting more women to sailing but also to its vision to be “New Zealand's leading one design keelboat class. One Design, does it all”, indeed a perfect size boat for women!

88 boat owners and/or women thoroughly enjoyed it despite the rather windy series not to mention the covid interruption.

As reminder, what’s in it for owners?

· Getting out there with a fun and experienced female crew, helping to build a pool of talented sailors as your mixed crew for your other races

· Knowing you are giving back to the sport by getting more women on the water to grow and develop sailing

· Benchmarking your crew against some of NZ’s best female sailing talent

· If you are a female boat owner, you will be able to skipper and/or fulfil other positions on the boats

· If you are interested in becoming an owner the Association can help with advice on buying an 88 and setting up or joining a syndicate (We can help with a syndicate agreement and budgeting information if this is of interest to you)

And this coming season, we are potentially looking at adding a twist to this series with some coaching on the water.

So let us know asap if you are interested by emailing Ziggy directly on treasurer@young88.org.nz for more information.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of you on out the water ….as soon as the racing resumes that is!

Ziggy

East

With the end of the winter session being disrupted by yet another lock down the east fleet at BBYC had an almost complete winter session with a mix of harbour and windward leeward ‘s to conclude on 12 race’s out of 13 to complete the session with 6 active Y88’s racing . https://www.bbyc.org.nz/results

Holding our breath to start the summer session to kick off the Wednesday night summer series when conditions allow, BBYC will also be hosting the up-and-coming owners’ champs in November.
