New “Top Gun” Wins 2020 Young 88 Single Handed Champs

Brad Marsh reports in after his successful inaugural outing on his new boat Dangerzone Sunday May 24th was the Bruce Elliott Memorial Single Handed Champs and the first event of the BBYC run 1,2,3 series for the Young 88 class. We purchased Dangerzone from Wellington with the intention of bringing it back to the Auckland fleet to enjoy the benefits of the class and the wide and varied racing it offers.

The Young 88 Owners Assocation Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 7th April in a very different format due to the current Covid-19 lock down in force in New Zealand. The meeting was successfully held via Microsoft Teams online video conference and proved very successful.

Regretfully in the face of the continuing escalation of the known cases of Covid19 and increasing risk to members and volunteers the Young 88 Association has decided that the only prudent option is to postpone the Nationals until later in the year.

2020 Harken Young 88 Nationals to Proceed On Water

This weekend sees the usual fleet of rock stars and weekend warriors mixing it up for the running of the 35th national championships of New Zealand's largest national one design keelboat fleet. There are currently seventeen entries showing online but expect that to change with a possible addition of two more boats and maybe a cancellation or two driven by the Corona Virus travel restrictions.

Auckland Young 88s Taking The Measure in 2020

Yesterday six boats and eight committee & crew volunteer measurers lined up for the annual Westhaven weighing/measuring session.  Any boat that has recently changed hands, had a structural or major component change (eg new engine)  gets asked to report  for a “check-up”.  Owners whose boats have not been weighed for years are also asked to come along.

One-design sailing at Bay of Islands Sailing Week

The Young 88s is always the largest one design keelboat fleet at Bay of Islands Sailing Week and this year they broke their own record with nine boats. The close racing attracts world class sailors – for 2020, Gavin Brady with his inevitably named Brady Bunch on his newly purchased Slipstream III handed the rest of the fleet a sailing lesson as they took every gun.....
